SUICIDE PREVENTION CHARITY URGES MORE HASTE IN SAVING YOUNG LIVES

January 24, 2023

A national charity is welcoming news that a new government strategy for suicide prevention will be published by the summer.

But the chief executive of PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide is urging haste.

Speaking at today’s National Suicide Prevention Alliance Conference in London, Ged Flynn, said: “At last, but we need more urgency here.

“Children and young people are more likely to die by suicide than because of any other illness or accident. Yet we have to watch as politicians got in the way of those who would want this to be an urgent government priority.”

Delegates attending the NSPA Conference were told publication of a new suicide prevention strategy for England will hopefully be published by the summer.

“Where are the children in all this? We need to include children and young people in the shape and design of any work to help them stay safe from suicide.

“Our children are not just the future they are our now,” added Mr Flynn.
