World Suicide Prevention Day 2015

24th July 2015

Often the emphasis in suicide prevention (including our own here at PAPYRUS) has been to get people experiencing suicidal ideation to speak out:

  • "Men should talk more"
  • "Call this number if you need help"
  • "Don't suffer alone"

Though well-intentioned and often helpful, such messages can place an unhelpful burden on a person at risk who already may have too much to cope with.

At PAPYRUS we want to “change the signs around”: our message is to remind everyone to Reach Out and Save Lives. This is the theme of this year's international World Suicide Prevention Day, held each year internationally on 10 September 2015.

PAPYRUS encourages open and safe talk about suicide. Look out for invitations that young people may be giving out, however subtly, that they may be considering ending their life. You cannot make it worse by asking someone whether they are feeling suicidal. Talking about suicide and allowing young people to tell their own story can be very healing and can itself reduce emotional distress.

#WSPD2015 is a key moment for us to remember that many young suicides are preventable. Keep an eye on our social media and website feeds for more details of our activities during August and September.

PAPYRUS is a key resource for families, professionals and communities to enable and support safe talk about suicide.

If you feel vulnerable to suicide and need someone to hear your story you can contact one of our professional advisors at HOPELineUK on 0800 068 41 41 in confidential for professional suicide prevention advice. You can also text pat@papyrus-uk.org or text us at 07786 209697.

If you want to help us mark World Suicide Prevention Day on or around 10 September 2015 in your community, contact us here or call one of our offices. It could save a young life!

Please reach out and save young lives. Thank you.

Be part of PAPYRUS

Suicide is the biggest killer of young people - male and female - under 35 in the UK. Many thousands more attempt or contemplate suicide, harm themselves or suffer alone, afraid to speak openly about how they are feeling.

We are the national charity for the prevention of young suicide. We draw from the experience of many who have been touched personally by young suicide across the UK and speak on their behalf in our campaigns and in our work. We need more people who share our aims to join us to strengthen our voice - together we can save young lives.
