On 6th March FAMILIAS (the Association for Catholic Diocesan Marriage and Family Life Ministry) hosted the first of four workshops with PAPYRUS, the national charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide.
The workshop, held at the Liverpool Catholic Centre for Evangelisation, was led by PAPYRUS Chief Executive Ged Flynn, and examined attitudes to and beliefs about suicide and explored what causes stigma around this most difficult of subjects. The workshop also sought to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes which may help to #saveyounglives and encouraged participants to think about developing local responses in their own dioceses, parishes and schools.
Over 100 people attended the event and organiser Maureen O’Brien (Coordinator for Marriage and Family Life Ministry in the Archdiocese of Liverpool) told us “Many of the attendees had personal experience of suicide and although the day would have been difficult at times the overall consensus was that it had given them the courage to speak about suicide.” One delegate told Maureen, “If today saves just one life then it has been worth it.”
FAMILIAS is hosting 3 more workshops with PAPYRUS in March at the following locations:-
