ASIST becomes first suicide prevention programme to be listed under revised NREPP

18th December 2015

ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) is the first suicide prevention programme to be listed under the new, more stringent standards found in the revised National Registry for Evidence-based Programmes and Practices (NREPP), an evidence-based repository and review system designed to provide the public with reliable information on mental health and substance abuse interventions in North America.

ASIST is listed based upon outcomes from Dr Madelyn Gould’s study of ASIST training with US National Suicide Prevention Lifeline workers. Dr Gould and her colleagues found that suicidal callers to the Lifeline who received an ASIST intervention were less depressed, less overwhelmed, less suicidal and more hopeful than callers who received an intervention by another method.

To view ASIST’s listing, visit the NREPP website at www.nrepp.samhsa.gov. Additional information about evidence in support of ASIST can be found in the Research and Evaluation section of the LivingWorks website.

PAPYRUS provides ASIST training to a wide range of organisations. For more information visit https://www.papyrus-uk.org/training/training-options/applied-suicide-intervention-skills-training

Suicide is the biggest killer of young people - male and female - under 35 in the UK. Many thousands more attempt or contemplate suicide, harm themselves or suffer alone, afraid to speak openly about how they are feeling.

We are the national charity for the prevention of young suicide. We draw from the experience of many who have been touched personally by young suicide across the UK and speak on their behalf in our campaigns and in our work. We need more people who share our aims to join us to strengthen our voice - together we can save young lives.
