Thinking of Suicide?

Are you, or is a young person you know, not coping with life? For confidential suicide prevention advice contact HOPELINEUK. We are open 9am–12am (midnight) every day of the year:

HOPEWALK 2020 marks the 8th annual walk to #SmashTheStigma and to raise vital funds for suicide prevention.  Last year you helped to raise over £40,000 during the month of October – this incredible achievement helped us to support over 8000 young people to find HOPE and stay safe from suicide.

If you’ve ever taken part in HOPEWALK, you might notice that things feel a little different this year! Taking part in a charity walk during a global pandemic is incredibly generous, and we have thought long and hard about how to make HOPEWALK 2020 safe for you and your loved ones. This year, instead of hosting a walk, you will be organising a smaller Household walk – whether this is with your family, your housemates, or a socially distanced walk with someone in your “bubble”.  Your walk can still be as adventurous as you’d like (walking your dog, or a 10 mile hike!) – we are simply encouraging you to plan your walk in a safe way.

PAPYRUS is following assiduously the guidance of HM Government and the UK Public Health authorities to ensure the well-being and safety of our staff, volunteers and supporters with whom we work. We encourage you to check for any updates from HM Government and from your local authority – we will try our best to update you if there are any major updates that might impact on your walk.

NEW for 2020

Pay what you can – previously HOPEWALK has had a fixed entry cost, however, this year we are encouraging you to pay what you can.  We understand that COVID19 has affected everyone in different ways, so you can choose what you pay to register your HOPEWALK starting from as little as £5. Whatever amount you choose you will be helping to make a difference to young lives as donations will go towards funding life-saving calls, texts or emails our helpline, HOPELINEUK. You will be taken to PayPal to pay, where you will need to re-enter this amount so that it matches your registration form.

Digital Host Pack – we have an amazing digital pack, absolutely full to the brim with information, resources, and fun activities! This year you will not receive a physical HOPEWALK pack in the post – however you will receive our brand new digital pack, which will make your HOPEWALK fun and exciting for all ages.

Public HOPEWALKS – to make HOPEWALK 2020 as safe as we can for you, we are only allowing Household HOPEWALKS to be registered.  This means we will not be able to advertise your walk on our website for other people to join.  However, you can spread the word to all your friends and family – maybe you could all go on a walk at the same time on the same day? Or host a virtual walk together, using video calling to feel connected.

Are you ready to take on HOPEWALK 2020 and help us to prevent young suicide? Register now to receive your digital fundraising pack and to start planning your event!

  • What is HOPEWALK?

PAPYRUS launched HOPEWALK eight years ago, around World Mental Health Awareness Day on October 10th  2013. Originally, we asked you to organise walks during this week in October, but over the years it has evolved and now takes place over the whole month of October.

Everyone’s HOPEWALK will be different with one common goal; to smash the stigma and get the conversation around suicide started.

  • How much does it cost?

This year we are operating a “pay what you can” system – so you have complete control over how  much your HOPEWALK costs.  Remember, just £5 can help us to support a young person with thoughts of suicide by call, text, or email.  Your registration fee goes straight back into supporting those at risk of suicide, and anyone worried about them.

  • Do I have to walk in October?

Most people choose to have their walk take place in October to celebrate World Mental Health Day, but you are more than welcome to walk at another time during the year.

  • I’d like to walk but don’t think I could organise my own. What can I do?

This year, we are encouraging smaller, household walks – so unfortunately, you will not be able to join a walk in your area. We would encourage you to register your walk and keep it as simple and as easy as you can – simply going for a lunchtime walk by yourself and reflecting on how we can #SmashTheStigma is fantastic.  Every HOPEWALK is important and appreciated – so please don’t feel like you have to organise a big event.

  • How do I invite people to join my walk?

This year we will not be advertising public HOPEWALKS, as we are following HM Government safety advice.  We are only allowing household HOPEWALKS to be registered at this time, but will update you if this changes.

  • Do I have to fundraise?

Some people choose to use their HOPEWALK to raise funds, others choose to walk in memory of a loved one or to raise awareness. Either is absolutely fine. You can choose to use your HOPEWALK to raise funds, but you absolutely don’t have to – our aim is to get the conversation around suicide started, in order to #SmashTheStigma.

  • What help can PAPYRUS offer me?

We can help guide you with planning your HOPEWALK, such as how to boost donations or sponsorship. You will receive our amazing digital fundraising pack – including a children’s activity pack! This is chock-full of information, hints and tips, as well as printable resources and fun activities.

Our press office can help advise you on how to promote your event in local media – please just get in touch at if you have any queries!

Don’t forget we’re always here to cheer you on so if there’s anything we can help with, just let us know.
