Soldier’s fundraising challenge to help prevent young suicide

4th October 2017

Brandon Luff from Abingdon, Oxfordshire has just begun an amazing challenge to raise awareness and funds to support the work of national charity PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide.

It is not a typical fundraising feat! 25 year old Brandon is a soldier in the 2nd Battalion the Rifle Regiment currently serving in Iraq. He has just begun a 10 mile a day hike carrying combat fighting order weighing 15 kgs and while conducting his normal duties in Iraq. What is more, the challenge will continue for the next 25 consecutive days.

Brandon recently lost a very close friend who took his own life. “Suicide is something I never considered would happen to someone close to me. It has opened my eyes to how much of a problem this is to young adults trying to cope with the pressures of life,” he explained.

“I am doing this to raise awareness and have invited everyone who is based out here to join in and donate. But above all, I’m doing this to help people to understand they are not alone and raise awareness of the help that PAPYRUS provides,” said Brandon who is originally from South Africa.

“This is an amazing challenge and wonderful support from these young men,” said Ottilie Scanlon, PAPYRUS fundraising officer. Every week our mental health advisors respond to around 1,500 calls, texts and emails from young people struggling with life as well as others concerned about them. This great effort from Brandon and his colleagues will help us to support more young people and extend our community training programmes.”

Be part of PAPYRUS

Suicide is the biggest killer of young people - male and female - under 35 in the UK. Many thousands more attempt or contemplate suicide, harm themselves or suffer alone, afraid to speak openly about how they are feeling.

We are the national charity for the prevention of young suicide. We draw from the experience of many who have been touched personally by young suicide across the UK and speak on their behalf in our campaigns and in our work. We need more people who share our aims to join us to strengthen our voice - together we can save young lives.
