To Guido Hakkenberg, a Dutchman working and living in London, cycling is second nature. This weekend he is undertaking the London Nightrider to save young lives, raising funds for national charity PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide.
Having personally experienced the impact of suicide following the death of both his father and uncle, Guido is only too aware of the stigma that prevents far too many people with suicidal thoughts seeking help.
“There needs to be far greater focus on mental health,” Guido stressed. “The statistics speak for themselves. Suicide is the leading cause of death in young people – male and female – under 35. That is why I want to raise awareness of the amazing prevention work that PAPYRUS does.
“Cycling in my home town of Amsterdam is so much easier than the streets of London. In Amsterdam cyclists own the roads, but here it is different, so I have been training seriously. I am excited to be cycling through the magic of London by night,” he enthused. “Above all I want to raise awareness that mental health needs more support.”
Ottilie Scanlon, PAPYRUS fundraising officer said: “It is great that Guido has chosen our charity, helping us to reach out to more young people, and those concerned about them, that there is help and hope when it is hard to see light at the dark times in life.
