On Sunday 10th June specialist respiratory paediatrician, Richard Chavasse from Reigate, is undertaking the ride of his life to save young lives.
Admitting that cycling in the past has been a once-a-year event during his annual summer holiday to Holland, Richard is undertaking the 100km London Nightrider to support national charity PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide.
“There are numerous charities linked to my work, all necessary, all worthwhile but extremely hard to choose between, so I chose to support a charity less related to my personal work but close to my heart,” said Richard. “As part of my work at St George’s Hospital, London, we frequently have to admit a young person who has tried to take their own life, often with devastating consequences. Usually they are ‘normal’ young people the same age as my own children. Young people who couldn’t find the right person to talk to in their moments of crisis. The PAPYRUS HOPELineUK helpline team comprises those people.
“Then when a school friend of my nephew took his own life, my decision to support PAPYRUS was sealed. The charity is there for those young people at their time of crisis, or preferably before the crisis occurs. They respond to around 200 contacts – calls, texts and emails – a day from vulnerable and suicidal young people and concerned others.
“Since entering the London Nightrider alongside Neil, my brother-in-law (who is also supporting Papyrus), I have tried to cycle every week, come rain or shine, a little bit further and a little faster. 100km will still be a major feat, but we need to smash the stigma of suicide to ensure that it ceases to be the main cause of death of young people under 35.”
“Huge thanks to Richard for his sterling support, helping us to raise awareness that there is hope and there is help,” said Ottilie Scanlon, PAPYRUS fundraising officer. “Fundraising is vital to our charity, supporting our HOPELineUK helpline services and equipping young people and their communities with the skills to recognise and respond to suicidal behaviour.”
