During the weekend of 24-25 June, Salt Ayre Cog Set junior cycling club hosted ‘Kyle’s 24 hour memorial ride, in memory of a young rider who tragically took his own life last year. The event proved to be successful in raising awareness for national charity PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide, along with raising over £8,900 for the charity. In the UK suicide is the main cause of death in young people - male and female - under 35.
379 riders rode a total of 16,561 miles, not quite around the world but the equivalent of cycling from Paris and back into mainland Europe. Cog Set would like to thank everyone who attended, donated raffle prizes and volunteered during the weekend.
Congratulations to all riders. Notably the top 10 distances (miles) ridden were : Nigel Dykes 315 , Bobby Horton 300, Malcolm Neil 254, Dave Horton 220, Ade Nelhams 186, Paolo Brucianni 186, Paul Edwards 185, Sam Pugh 181, Ken Williams 168, James McCracken 162, Paul Andrews 144.
Also a special well done to all young riders, the Cog Setters, who started the event with their own special session, totting up over 800 miles in the first 2 hours.
"This is an amazing effort by the Salt Ayre Cog Set who certainly had their wheels spinning to support us," said Ottilie Scanlon, PAPYRUS fundraising officer. "We rely heavily on fundraising and the club's support will certainly help us to reach out with messages of help and hope to more young people who are struggling with life."
