Six months ago Lisa Bean’s daughter Adreanna took her own life at just 18 years old. District nurse Lisa, who now lives in Shepperton, and her old school friend Lorna Pearce, a social worker in Bracknell, now aim to raise awareness of the need for more support for young people like Adreanna, struggling with anxiety and depression.
Taking time out from work to raise money for PAPYRUS, the national charity dedicated to preventing young suicides, the friends are cycling from John O’Groats to Lands’ End, leaving on Sunday 14th May and scheduled to reach Lands’ End two weeks’ later on Sunday 28th May.
“It was Lorna’s idea to mark Adreanna’s legacy this way,” said Lisa. “Lorna and I go back to our secondary school days at St Bernard’s Convent in Langley then on to 6th form at Strodes College, Egham. She is a close friend and was very fond of Adreanna.
“Adreanna was a popular and energetic girl who brought out the best in people, and had taken on an apprenticeship to help young people with mental health problems; something close to her heart as she struggled with anxiety and depression.
“We are supporting PAPYRUS in their awareness-raising work so that other families do not endure the devastation of losing a young person through suicide. Sadly we cannot bring Adreanna back, but we can help to ensure that other young people have access to practical help and advice to promote mental wellbeing and keep them suicide-safe.
“We thank Lisa and Lorna for their amazing effort, helping us to extend our reach to more young people before it is too late,” said Ottilie Scanlon, PAPYRUS fundraising officer. “This is a great challenge and we thank everyone helping us to save young lives, by supporting their challenge in memory of Adreanna.”

As they travel Lisa and Lorna aim to raise awareness that suicide is the main cause of death of all young people under 35 years, but there is help available. They welcome interviews along the way. See contact details below, together with a schedule of their cycle challenge.
