In the UK suicide is the main cause of death in young people under 35. One Guernsey woman aims to help change that.
On Sunday 15th October, 24 year old Emily Nuttall from St Peter Port and a group of young friends have organised a walk along the Guernsey coast, to raise awareness of the work of national charity PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide and the help and hope it provides to young people struggling with life. Everyone is welcome.
After meeting at Pembroke Café car park, the PAPYRUS HOPE Walk will follow a route of just under five miles along the coastal path to Cholet Beach playground, passing behind the houses at Le Picquerel as far as the Houmet Tavern, before returning to the Pembroke Café. All ages are welcome, dogs included, for all or part of the walk.
“PAPYRUS is a great charity, which relies heavily on donations and fundraising,” said Emily. “I have battled with my own mental health for many years and the charity’s HOPELineUK helpline team has given me so much support, allowing me to speak openly about my own thoughts of suicide and helping me with my journey of recovery,” said Emily “I strongly believe that because of PAPYRUS I am still here and determined to win. I want other young people to know that this service is there if they reach desperate times in their lives. They do not, and should not, have to struggle alone.”
Ottilie Scanlon, PAPYRUS fundraising officer responded: “This is wonderful support, which will help us to reach out to more young people, as well as others who may be concerned about a young person they know. Every week our experienced mental health advisors respond to over 1,500 calls, texts and emails, providing practical suicide prevention help and support – what to say and do.”
“The Guernsey walk is one of around 40 PAPYRUS HOPEWalks taking place throughout the UK around 10th October World Mental Health Day.
