Bath University student on ride of his life to save young lives

31st May 2017

On Tuesday 6th June, 21 year old Adam Dearling, from Chapmanslade, Wiltshire, a natural sciences student at the University of Bath, begins a personal cycling challenge from Edinburgh to Luxembourg in memory of his best friend Brodie Eaton, who sadly took his own life in November last year.

Adam is raising vital funds for PAPYRUS the national charity dedicated to preventing young suicide.

Adam and Brodie were five when they met at the International School of Luxembourg and became best friends immediately. They shared the same birthday and joint parties. For the next seven years they were ‘joined at the hip’ developing the same interests and aspirations.

When Adam moved back to England at 12, they spoke most days and saw each other most years. Although they continued to talk they never got the chance to see each other once they started university (Brodie at Ayr Campus, University of Scotland) as they worked during the holidays.

“I finally had the time and money to see Brodie last year, but the week I was going to ask he sadly took his own life. I was devastated but knew I had to go to his university and do something in his memory,” said Adam. “From then I started planning this trip as a way of coping. PAPYRUS had to be the charity I’d support. I’ve never been much of a cyclist but I committed to riding 1,000 miles in 10 days.

“Brodie Eaton was and will always be remembered as one of the kindest and most fun-loving souls ever to walk this earth and I have planned my route to take in places significant to our friendship. I hope to create an album from these stops to present to Brodie’s family.”

Ottilie Scanlon, PAPYRUS fundraising officer, stressed how vital Adam’s effort was to help the charity raise awareness and support its HOPELineUK helpline services. “This is an amazing effort by Adam, who has already held a cake bake fundraiser at his university. He is helping us keep young people safe through tough times and helping them find hope for the future.”

Be part of PAPYRUS

Suicide is the biggest killer of young people - male and female - under 35 in the UK. Many thousands more attempt or contemplate suicide, harm themselves or suffer alone, afraid to speak openly about how they are feeling.

We are the national charity for the prevention of young suicide. We draw from the experience of many who have been touched personally by young suicide across the UK and speak on their behalf in our campaigns and in our work. We need more people who share our aims to join us to strengthen our voice - together we can save young lives.
