Manchester Girls’ Super Six Challenge is a First
September 2009
Six intrepid girls from the Manchester Triathlon Club have completed an enormous physical and mental challenge, which is the first of its kind. In doing so they have raised over £4,000 to date for PAPYRUS.
Kate Gallop (24), Catie Smith (30), Anna Tayer (24), Deborah Tout (30) Elise Welch (29) and Katie Winter (26) climbed the UK’s three largest peaks - Ben Nevis, Scarfell Pike, Snowdon - and swam the three largest lakes - Loch Lomond, Lake Windermere, Lake Bala - in a continuous relay that took just 58 hours, two hours ahead of their target 60 hours.
That is over 10,000ft of climbing and 35 miles swimming from this super fit team that undertook a rigid training regime, determined to raise funds to help save young lives. To add to the challenge the girls confronted the cold lake waters in swimming costumes, no wetsuits were worn.
The girls endured severe weather conditions during the weekend with ice cold murky waters, gail force wind and heavy rain on Snowdon and tricky navigation through windsurfers, boats and canoes on their final leg across Lake Bala.
“It was an amazing few days and an experience that everybody involved will never forget. We do owe a lot to Dave Quartermain of Uberfit Events for coaching us,” said Kate Gallop on behalf of the team and support crew. “We had highs and lows, many tears were shed and obscenities shouted but all negatives were forgotten the second we finished the challenge. We are so proud to be the first people ever to complete the Super Six Challenge and to come away injury free and still friends is an absolute bonus. Above all, in our hearts and minds throughout was the thought of giving hope to vulnerable young people through the work that PAPYRUS does in preventing young suicide.”
