Tune into i-tunes for Song4Emma
When Emma Curley took her own life last December, her cousin Stewart Craner resolved to turn his and her family’s shock and devastation into positive action to help other vulnerable young people. Determined that a charity would benefit Stewart’s research drew his attention to PAPYRUS and our helpline HOPELineUK.

Emma was a huge music fan and concert goer, especially loving all the boy bands. A song in her memory was an obvious choice to Stewart, who runs a music management company in his spare time. Stewart had gained solace following Emma’s death by playing a song Malc Evans, a local songwriter, had given him some time previously. That song, 1000 tears has now been recorded in a Liverpool studio by a group of musicians from Coventry - all donating their time to the project.

Another contact of Stewart’s, 90’s boy band singer Richie Wermerling - with Let Loose whose hits include 17 and Crazy - offered to donate another track called God Bless to the project.

The songs are now complete and should be available to download at i-tunes shortly. The aim is to reach over 1,000 downloads, which Stewart believes could ensure a listing on the national top 40 chart - and help raise awareness of the support that PAPYRUS and HOPELineUK provide every day to vulnerable young people and those concerned about them.

Please tune in to MySpace and Song4Emma to support PAPYRUS.

Downing Street Charity Tribute
PAPYRUS chair, Anne Parry, attended a reception at 10 Downing Street as a guest of Delyn MP David Hanson in recognition of the work the charity does throughout the UK. Leading Government figures paid tribute to the hard working individuals and organisations in the public and voluntary sector, which make such a positive difference to our communities.

Speaking at the event Harriet Harman MP, the Leader of the House of Commons, thanked all of the individuals and public organisations that continue to work so hard in communities to change lives and make a difference.

David Hanson said: “I want to pay tribute to the work that PAPYRUS does in our community. Having worked with the charity over a number of years I know what important work they do and I am proud to be a patron.

“There are so many people that work so hard in the public and voluntary sector to lift communities and make a difference to people’s lives; it was inspiring to see so many of them together at Downing Street.”

Said Anne Parry: “It was an honour to represent the charity at such a prestigious event and for PAPYRUS to be recognised by the Government for our contribution to society.”

Credit Crunch Suicide Awareness
Beat the Loan Sharks – Bite Back
Trading Standards teams all over the country are highlighting the plight of people trapped by the credit crunch who may be turning to illegal loan sharks.

They are asking members of the public to report individuals so that they can be removed from the community.

All lenders must have a licence to lend money. Trading Standards teams can help people find alternative forms of financial assistance; they can advise on maximising income and benefits and will always ensure safety.

Steve Toolby Investigations Manager based in Cardiff said ‘The first thing to know is that you don’t have to pay the loan shark, the loan is unenforceable. Unfortunately the ‘money lender’ is usually only nice when you keep paying resorting to intimidation when you can’t pay the loan off. Sadly this kind of borrowing sometimes leads people to consider suicide.’

Trading Standards in Wales operate a 24 hour hotline on 0300 123 33 11 Trading Standards in England and Scotland can be contacted via your local authority.
