Check in on your mates over the hols

Waterloo Road’s Tom Milner supports suicide prevention charity’s New Year message

PAPYRUS, the national charity for prevention of young suicide, is asking all young people to watch out for each other through the Christmas and New Year holiday and festivities.

We all tend to put our problems on the back burner at this time, hoping the break will bring solutions. Yet for anyone who can’t see a future, nothing is resolved and they can sink into despair.

Actor singer Tom Milner (Paul Langley in Waterloo Road) is supporting the charity’s work:

“I’ve been lucky but many young people are really struggling with so many different pressures right now and if things aren’t working out, the New Year can feel like a massive let down. So keep in touch and be there for each other and if you are worried about a mate, please encourage them to get help! Tell them about PAPYRUS and this website - let them know about HOPELineUK.”

Ged Flynn, PAPYRUS chief executive says,

“We don’t want to spoil the fun, but for vulnerable young people this time of year can add to the pressure to be happy all the time and can push them further into a quiet despair. The focus on spending time with others can be difficult for those without close family and friends. For some young people, even being in a crowd with people they love can be a very uncomfortable place because they secretly feel rubbish.

“Alcohol and recreational drugs can add to existing low mood and cause young people who are at risk of suicide to act impulsively on their feelings.

“Our Christmas message is clear. Enjoy yourselves. Relax. But also, look out for yourself this Christmas and look out for each other - especially young people. Don’t be afraid to check out with them to see that they are OK.

If you have a concern, you or they, can call the PAPYRUS helpline HOPELineUK 0800 068 41 41. It is open every day during Christmas and New Year.

As Tom Milner says,
“YOU might be able to save a young life this Christmas.”
