Self Harm Care Guidance Released
PAPYRUS welcomes new NICE guidance.
PAPYRUS welcomes the release of The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance for longer-term psychological treatment and management of self harm in England and Wales. This supplements the current guidance that focuses on the short-term physical and psychological management and secondary prevention of self harm in primary and secondary care. With self harm affecting approximately 10% of young people, the guidance provides important steps to ensuring proper treatment and care is provided to those who self harm.
The guidance focuses on providing key recommendations for working with people who self harm; how to properly use a self harm risk assessment; developing care plans and treatment recommendations.
Gareth Allen, guideline developer representing service user and carer interests, emphasises: “Every person who self harms is different; they do it for individual reasons and have their own individual needs. It is hoped the recommendations made in this new guideline will help healthcare professionals identify the needs and risks that should be considered when assessing a person who has self harmed and the types of treatment available.”
PAPYRUS was a member of the guidance development group.
If you are a young person who self harms or their carer, the guidance is available in a format written for patients and carers to help you understand the care and treatment options that should be available in the NHS.
