Facts

HOPELineUK is a specialist telephone helpline service staffed by trained professionals who give non-judgmental support, practical advice and information to

  • children, teenagers and young people up to the age of 35 who are worried about themselves
  • anyone who is concerned about a young person

They will listen to you in confidence and try to help you deal with your own suicidal thoughts or cope with someone else who may be feeling this way.

From our comprehensive database our helpline team can find contact details of additional sources of help for you.

The helpline is open Monday – Friday from 10am – 5pm and 7pm – 10pm, and 2pm – 5pm on weekends.

Calls are free from BT landlines, other networks and mobiles may vary. If the helpline is busy or if you need to call outside opening hours you can leave an answerphone message and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Your call will not appear on your itemised BT telephone bill.

  • Concerned friends: at work, in school, at college.
  • Health Professionals: mental health practitioners, GPs, nurses, A & E staff.
  • Education Staff: teachers, lecturers, school nurses, education social workers.
  • and more: police, ambulance and prison staff, drugs and alcohol services, probation workers.

SAFEGUARDING*

All calls are confidential and can be made without disclosing names, location or personal details.
In certain cases where our advisers become aware of imminent danger to life, we will advise that emergency support is required. We will usually get callers* to work with us in accessing fast response services. Where appropriate, we may need to ask emergency services to become involved in order to prevent a suicide or other significant harm, even if the caller's consent is not given. In such cases, we will only ask the emergency services to locate the caller and to intervene. We will not share information other than absolute essentials.

Why?

Many deaths can be prevented. Suicide is not the inevitable outcome for a distressed young person going through a difficult time.

We know that appropriate help can prevent suicide.

It is important to share your concerns – about yourself or someone else.

We also know that picking up the phone can be the most difficult thing in the world to do.
