PAPYRUS seeks to establish positive relationships with all media. We welcome your enquiries and always endeavour to respond promptly.

One of our aims is to make people aware that although many think about suicide, only a small number actually attempt to take their own lives and of these only a small proportion go on to kill themselves. The support we receive from journalists and broadcasters to help communicate our message that suicide is preventable is hugely appreciated. We hope that media coverage of this subject conveys a message of optimism and hope.

The anxiety of suicide impacts thousands of people - parents, families, carers, professionals, work colleagues and friends: people who could be your readers, listeners or viewers seeking advice, concerned that a young person who they know is feeling suicidal - and very often anxious that a wrong approach could tip that person over the edge.

Click here for more information about HOPELineUK, our helpline staffed by trained mental health professionals who give practical help and advice. We also have a range of helpful information leaflets that can be downloaded here.

We shall be pleased to provide original comment, ‘case study’ references, statistical data, the charity’s position on relevant issues and background information on subjects that include:
  • Why do young people take their own lives?
  • Risk factors.
  • Possible warning signs.
  • How to help - what to say and do.
  • Sources of professional help.
  • Case studies - parents, other family members/friends who have lost young people through suicide.

  • and on our campaigning subjects that include…
  • Safety on the Internet - why the current Suicide Act 1961 (when the Internet did not exist) needs to be revised.
  • Reducing the stigma of suicide.
  • Encouraging people - with young people in particular - to discuss the subject of suicide more openly.
  • Encouraging young males to feel that it is OK to express emotion and feelings.
  • Reducing copycat suicide by responsible reporting.
