Flying High to help save lives

Congratulations Jo McDonough and friend Lisa Anderson who soared through the sky in a sponsored tandem skydive on Monday 5th July to commemorate the life of Jo’s husband Chris on the first anniversary of his suicide. Jo in particular is scared of heights. We admire their courage and thank them for their support.

“The whole experience was amazing,” said Jo. “I am speechless as to how to explain how it felt, but I’d do it again. To think that we raised so much money and had an unforgettable experience at the same time is wonderful! It’s just breathtaking and was worth all the time and effort we put into it.”

Any foreign coins? (left to right) Diane Herbert, Lucy Cordey and Clare Doherty proudly display their Rome Marathon medals at Trevi Fountain. Running in Rome to help Save Young Lives

Diane Herbert from Burnley, with two friends from high school days, who used to live in the Burnley area - Lucy Cordey and Clare Doherty - joined thousands of runners in this year’s (21st March) Rome Marathon in memory of their close friend Caroline, to raise money for PAPYRUS the Burnley-based national charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide.

The girls, none of them runners, achieved a very creditable time of 5hrs 35mins. They had been training diligently for almost a year for this, their first marathon. “We were determined to do all we could to help raise the profile of PAPYRUS so that young people and those around them know where they can access the help they need,” said Diane. “Caroline was very much in our thoughts as we took off from the Coliseum and passed Rome’s amazing classic sights - Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps included - cheered on by another two school friends Samantha Carter and Rebecca Whittaker.”

The girls have raised over £1,000 to date and are hoping their effort doesn’t stop there. You can still support their efforts at www.justgiving.com/romemarathon2010.

Any foreign coins? Spare Your Change to Spare a Life

Returned from an overseas holiday or business trip?
It could be that you have spare foreign currency coins, even the old pre-euro coins, lurking at the back of your drawer or bottom of your purse.
UK banks will not exchange them, but PAPYRUS can turn them into a valuable resource to support our vital work preventing young suicide. We rely heavily on donations … every nickel or dime, cent or sentimo, piastre or peso counts!

Please send your coins to Lisa Stansbie at our head office address here.

Daniel Grimwood Recital
Daniel Grimwood Recital
Tonbridge School

The James Naylor Memorial Fund Piano Recital by Daniel Grimwood was the first fundraising event following the tragic death of James in January this year.

James was a Tonbridge Scholar 1998 - 2003 and went on to take a classics degree at Magdalen College, Oxford.

The aim of the fund is to help the prevention of suicide by young people and the promotion of their mental health and wellbeing. Proceeds from this concert are very kindly being donated to PAPYRUS.

Daniel Grimwood is a distinctive performer and composer, with an uncompromising approach to his music making. The programme for this recital consisted of popular pieces by Chopin, Liszt, Schumann and Rachmaninov.

Across America for Ben Across America for Ben

When Freddie Athill lost his close friend Ben Martin through suicide at the beginning of this year he was determined to do something positive in Ben’s memory.

As a result, he and his friends - Alex Kinloch, Phil Lis and George Stancliffe - are now well on their way cycling 4,000 miles across America. They are crossing 10 States, from Oregon in the West to Virginia in the East and making fantastic progress following a route used for training by the great Lance Armstrong.

Why did Freddie choose to support PAPYRUS?

In his words: “I became aware of PAPYRUS when Ben took his own life and again when PAPYRUS organised a suicide prevention day at my university. I wanted to do something in memory of Ben, who a lot of people loved a great deal. A closer look at the work of PAPYRUS - HOPELineUK, YoungPAPYRUS, suicide prevention training in universities and colleges and work on the All Party Parliamentary Group for Suicide Prevention - really impressed me and made it clear that if I’m cycling in memory of Ben, then PAPYRUS is the relevant and more than worthy charity.”

Good luck guys - fantastic effort! To support Freddie and his team visit www.justgiving.com/theamericanexpress2009/

Message from Freddie to PAPYRUS on 15 August

The ride is going well and I am in the college town of Berea, Kentucky, on a resting and well needed day off. We plan to arrive in Yorktown Virginia on 26th so have only about 700 miles left, and the Appalachian mountain range. It has been difficult but we have kept to schedule and managed to somehow cover the miles.

Walking the Longest Coastline in Britain Walking the Longest Coastline in Britain

Horrified by young suicide statistics, along with having had friends who had tragically taken their own lives, Jamie Stephenson and Sam Hebburn decided to do something to raise awareness and money for PAPYRUS.

Jamie and Sam’s challenge was to walk, under their own steam, the 420 mile complete perimeter of Cornwall in 28 days and aim to raise £1,000. In fact they did it in 25 days and the money raised is now over £1,700 and still rising.

PAPYRUS Trustee, Paul Kelly visited them just past the half way mark on the Lizard Peninsula. Looking bronzed and fit and proudly wearing their PAPYRUS t-shirts they both admitted that the first week had been so hard they had been tempted to give up – but the thought of PAPYRUS kept them going!

You may donate to Sam and Jamie’s fund raising effort here and enter their names in the ‘sponsor a friend’ box.

Beat_the_Blues The Braddell Family Beating the Blues

Michael and Clare Braddell, along with a fantastic committee of family and friends, organised Beat the Blues in memory of their son, Sebastian.

Beat the Blues took place at the Hurlingham Club, London. The venue was spectacular with lots of starry backcloths, and electric blue lights made the whole place glow. During a champagne reception ten Blues Girls sold raffle tickets in pairs, for three amazing prizes. A delicious four course dinner followed for 230 guests. The tables looked gorgeous with cream and white flowers, and the atmosphere was very lively, with everyone seemingly in a party mood.

Humphrey Butler, the auctioneer, was hilarious and very witty. He managed to attract a lot of bids, even though the timing of the party could not have been worse! At 10:30, after dinner 150 more guests arrived, average age 23. The band started, the wine flowed and everybody danced. It was a very successful party, raising substantial funds and awareness for PAPYRUS.

At the end of the John O'Groats to Lands End cycle ride Oliver Patrick
and Lewis Morgan
On the run for PAPYRUS

Great to hear that the 930 mile Land’s End to John O’Groats cycling marathon(pictured) by Oliver Patrick and Lewis Morgan in memory of their friend Rosemary Edwards was spot on plan.

Sarah Lomax completed the Adidas Women’s 5K Challenge in Hyde Park in record time (encouraged by brother, Jonny), despite pouring rain. Maxine Firth battled against strong winds to complete the Bridlington Half Marathon. Imogen Fecher was pleased with her time in the BUPA Great South Run in memory of her brother Cas.

Terry Parker, a Youth Community Safety Worker, finished the Great Yorkshire Run in excellent time and Matt Wood overcame “too much sun” (where was he?) and a very hilly course for success in the Windsor Half Marathon.

James Couldwell completed two Triathlons in two weeks for PAPYRUS, Edward Park ran the Dublin Marathon and Ellen and Kathyrn Barnes ran the Great North Run.

Michael Portillo supports the Andy Findon CD Michael Portillo Musical Legacy

Did you see the moving BBC2 programme, Death of School Friend, presented by Michael Portillo? Now you can buy the music - and support PAPYRUS.

Gary Findon was a brilliant classical musician and composer who 40 years ago took his own life at the age of 15. He was a school friend of Michael Portillo who, with Gary’s family, made a film about his life and the legacy he left behind

During the filming it was revealed that Gary’s music, thought to have been destroyed at the time of his suicide had been kept hidden by his mother. Now the family has recorded a selection in Gary’s memory and is very generously donating the proceeds to PAPYRUS.

Please support us by purchasing a copy - it is fantastic value at £5. Buy now
