Michael Nyman and Guy Barker
in Tribute Concert to help Save Young Lives
24 June 2009
Michael Nyman and Guy Barker join a stunning line-up of distinguished musicians at the Wigmore Hall on 18 July in a tribute concert in aid of PAPYRUS the national charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide.
Following Michael Portillo’s much acclaimed and moving BBC television film about Gary Findon - Death of a Schoolfriend - the concert pays tribute to the gifts of this talented young musician with distinguished artists performing some of Gary’s own compositions and an eclectic selection of music associated with him. Gary Findon took his own life in 1969 at the age of 15.
The programme includes works by Michael Nyman performed by the composer, music by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and a jazz selection by Dave Brubeck and Miles Davis. It is introduced by Michael Portillo.
The full list of artists includes Michael Nyman piano, Anthony Saunders piano, Wu Qian piano, Andrew Marriner clarinet, Andy Findon flute, Guy Barker trumpet and Ross Stanley piano.
The concert is the initiative of Nigel Rogers of Grant Rogers Musical Artists’ Management, who was also at Harrow School with Gary and played Ko Ko alongside Gary’s Yum Yum in a school production of the Mikado. All the artists have donated their time and talent. Andy’s son Marc has arranged and completed some of his uncle’s compositions.
Said Andy Findon: “PAPYRUS and its national helpline HOPELineUK provides vital help and support to young people who are feeling suicidal and others worried about a young person they know. Our aim for this concert, as well as paying tribute to my brother’s musical talent, is to raise funds to support the work of PAPYRUS and prevent other families’ enduring the distress that is inevitable following suicide.”
