PAPYRUS Welcomes Revised Editors’ Codebook
9 March 2009
PAPYRUS the national charity for Prevention of Young Suicide welcomes the revised edition of The Editors’ Codebook. “This is an excellent step in the right direction,” commented Anne Parry, the charity’s chair. “We are pleased that the Editors’ Code of Practice Committee has listened to the concerns of organisations like PAPYRUS and made an effort to include our views.
We particularly welcome the new separate briefing section on the reporting of suicide. “This is a very positive move forward, the outcome of continuing co-operation between those working to protect and promote the wellbeing of vulnerable people and those around them, and the organisations that deliver the nation’s news. As a result, we look forward to more sensitive and informed reporting,” Anne Parry added.
“With its remit to help reduce the number of young people who take their own lives, PAPYRUS will continue to lobby for change in areas that remain our concern, through a continuing strong working relationship with The Code of Practice Committee and the Press Complaints Commission.”
